About Cats Age Calculator
Cats Age Calculator answers one question: how old is my cat, really? Most people still multiply by seven, which would make a one-year-old cat a seven-year-old child. A one-year-old cat is closer to a 15-year-old: fully grown and still a little wild. So we built a calculator on the scale vets use, and wrote the rest of the site to explain what each age means for your cat’s care.
The Formula We Use
The calculator follows the life-stage guidelines published by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP):
- Year one counts as about 15 human years.
- Year two counts as about 9 more, so a two-year-old cat is around 24.
- From then on, each birthday adds about 4 human years.
Every result also gets a life stage (Kitten, Junior, Adult, Mature, Senior or Geriatric), because the stage tells you more about what your cat needs than the number does.
Where Our Information Comes From
Our guides draw on the AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage guidelines, the Cornell Feline Health Center and published research on cat lifespan. Each article lists the sources it used at the bottom, and the methodology page shows the full formula and every cut-off the calculator uses.
If a guideline changes or a reader points out a mistake, we fix the page and change its date. Cats Age Calculator is run independently and is not a veterinary practice, so nothing here replaces a checkup. If something about your cat worries you, call your vet.
How We Make Money
The site is free to use. It is supported by display ads and by Amazon links in some articles: if you buy through one of those links, we earn a small commission and you pay nothing extra. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. We only suggest the kinds of things we’d buy for our own cats, like kitten food, dental treats and joint support for older cats, and no brand pays us to be mentioned.
